Writing in Fast Company, Nate Berg reports on the development of Illuminarium, a new immersive entertainment and educational environment. The facility, about open in Atlanta, with plans for similar venues in other cities, will immerse participants in an environment of large scale projections and other special effects to create realistic experiences such as an African safari or a trip to the moon.
The installation is an example of the kind of environments that are possible by assembling a suite of new technologies. The immediate implications for learning are limited to similar commercial installations, but as past experience has shown, technologies introduced in specialized settings soon become more widely available and may support more widespread applications in various venues, including more conventional learning environments.
