A recent article in Recode reports that Amazon is drafting model regulations to govern the use of facial recognition technology. With the use of facial recognition growing, often with the aid of Amazon’s Rekognition software, and with some municipalities pushing back by banning such use, Amazon is turning to regulation as a way to offer some safeguards, possibly against the mis-attributions that disproportionally involve people of color. However, Amazon is not disclosing the nature of the regulations it is drafting and critics worry that they will provide weak protection at best.
