Over the past decade there has been growing interest in new designs for learning spaces, including classrooms and entire schools. In a recent article, Cathy Rubin interviews designer Lene Jensby Lange, the founder of Danish design firm Autens on her work supporting educators to re-imagine learning spaces.
The interview covers a number of interesting topics tied together by the aim of using space to support the creation of a new shared culture of teaching and learning. A typical interaction with educators begins with them asking for traditional schools and classrooms. However, after experiences in which they engage in design thinking and project-based learning, their requests become more varied and include elements such as diverse spaces (e.g., gathering spaces, maker zones, collaboration zones, presentation zones, and small nooks) to support a more ambitious pedagogical repertoire.
