Like most tools and technologies, the Internet has been used for good or uplifting purposes as well as for bad or dispiriting agendas. Writing in The Guardian, Zoe Williams discusses the contrast first between Wikipedia and Facebook for their impacts on human societies, and more pointedly the contrast between Wikipedia as a repository of human knowledge and the recent attacks on it by the current owner of what used to be Twitter.
Williams questions the reasons for the attack and concludes that a valued social resource is an insult to him personally. Perhaps the main takeaway from the contrast between Wikipedia and the site that used to be call Twitter is that leadership makes a difference. Like more traditional learning institutions, elements of the Internet depend on the qualities and values held by their leaders.
