Writing on Edutopia, Youki Tourada and Stephen Merrill review the factors that contribute to classrooms that support student learning. They consider a wide range of topics, including lighting, ventilation and air quality, color and complexity, data walls, nature and biophylic elements, student artifacts, flexible elements, acoustics, heat, seating, and zoning for activities.

Although control over many of these elements may not be extended to teachers, there are ways to adjust and leverage the elements that are controllable. Moreover, a growing base of research on these and other design elements may provide support for investments in classroom designs that improve conditions for learning.
