As a result of the introduction of a range of digital learning applications, we are quickly gaining experience in the automated collection of data related to learning and learners. In addition to data gathered through applications hosted on institutional learning platforms there is increasing activity to collect data from individuals as they use personal technology platforms such as mobile devices, games, and social media sites.
A challenge for gathering comprehensive data on learners will be to work across the various platforms and data sources to create an integrated data system for unified data infrastructure. A key dimension of this work will be developing an architecture to protect individual data while making it available, often in anonymous form, for educational research purposes, where appropriate.
