With the growing use of data for research and applications in virtually all sectors of society, there is increasing concern about the ethical dimensions of decisions made by researchers and collaborators as they gather, process, analyze, and share data more widely than ever before. The allure of applying data science techniques can take researchers right up to and sometimes beyond what should be ethical boundaries.
To provide guidance on data ethics the UK Statistical Authority has issued a framework, guidelines, and a scoring form to support researchers in conducting a self-assessment of their work to determine if their plans fall within recognized ethical guidelines. These tools provide investigators with an efficient method of reviewing their work for any ethical concerns that could be raised prior to commencing projects.
