A global survey of learners sponsored by Pearson and conducted by The Harris Poll has identified a number of key trends regarding attitudes toward education. While learners world wide believe that education will continue to be important for their success, the favored forms of such education may be shifting.
Learners are embracing a do-it-yourself or self-service approach to learning, enabled by the growing access to technology and the development of a broad menu of educational options. Learners also expect digital learning to be the new normal in the next decade. Coupled with more positive attitudes toward DIY learning is less confidence in traditional educational institutions.
As self-directed learning becomes a more substantial part of the learning landscape, understanding how to facilitate quality learning opportunities for learners in DIY mode will become more important than ever. This may provide an opportunity to draw on and extend the existing body of research on self-directed learning.
