The University of Michigan has announced that it will invest $50 million to create a Center for Academic Innovation, which will include curricular innovation through new online and hybrid offerings, educational data, and software tools for learning both on campus and beyond.
An investment of this size and scope is relatively rare in higher education, but it has the potential to extend the Michigan brand well beyond the campus while simultaneously providing an expanded learning ecosystem for existing students on campus. The Center may well become the hub of new approaches to online learning by developing unique tools to support a Michigan approach to what is the fastest growing segment of higher education.
It will be worth watching the new Center to see how it develops. It will also be worth watching other higher ed institutions to see if they follow the Michigan path.
