Despite many efforts to examine YouTube, there are few datasets available that provide a comprehensive look at the enormous video collection and sharing site. In a recent paper published in the Journal of Quantitative Description, authors Ryan McGrady, Keven Shen, Rebecca Duran, Jason Baumgartner, and Ethan Zuckerman report on the results of their large scale examination of YouTube. They use several innovative methods to assemble a large sample of YouTube videos and develop estimates of the overall size and major features of the entire video collection, a collection they estimate to include 14 billion video as of 2023. in addition, they maintain an interactive dashboard of data on YouTube videos based on random samples created periodically.
