Rome Call for AI Ethics

As reported in Business Insider, Microsoft and IBM together with the Vatican have endorsed a statement known as the Rome Call for AI Ethics. The call highlights the need to establish an ethical foundation for future work on artificial intelligence, particularly applications such as facial recognition. In addition to serving and protecting human beings and the environment, the Rome Call argues that artificial intelligence should be developed to include all human beings and exclude no one.

A section on education calls attention to the importance of universal access to education across the life span and to the need to raise awareness of the opportunities and the critical issues posed by AI. A section on rights lists six principles to guide the development of AI: transparency, inclusion, responsibility, impartiality, reliability, and security/privacy.
