Writing in TechCrunch, Sarah Perez reports that the recent settlement of a case brought by state attorneys general against Meta resulted in a headline settlement of an $18 billion payout from Meta to the states. But she also points out that the settlement contained something else that has received less attention. As part of the settlement the plaintiff states have agreed not to bring any claims regarding the past, present, or future use of children’s data under COPPA (Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act) or similar state laws. Seems like there is more to be done to protect children online.
