There is growing pressure to require age verification in an effort to protect children online. However, some of the initiatives in this area also pose risks for general users forced to provide personal information as Justin Newman describes in a PC Mag article on the topic. To address these dual concerns of protecting children while minimizing the need to collect personally identifiable information from everyone, Discord is introducing a new approach that is less reliant on gathering identifying information from all users. The Discord approach is discussed in a recent piece also in PC Mag by James Peckham.
