As school leaders, teachers, and parents wrestle with the question of the place of artificial intelligence in educational institutions they are discovering that they may not have the final word even on applications within those institutions. As Liz Ticong explains in an article in EWeek, Google is making some of those decisions for schools that rely on its managed k-12 student accounts. Beginning in 2027 schools will not be able to maintain student access to Search while removing its integrated AI components. The new arrangements and options also have implications for the handling of student data and may require schools to modify and update their policies. The particulars seem less important than the fact that schools long ago decided to embrace tools made by others that have now become central to their operations.
