Writing in the LA Times, Colleen Shalby describes how students in the California State University system have found advantages in the online courses that were offered to them as a result of the pandemic. The students, many of whom are juggling other responsibilities, found that the online courses allowed them to balance college, work, and their responsibilities at home. Moreover, these students appreciated the savings of time and money from eliminating commuting.
The article includes interviews with a number of students who describe their own situations. Despite the advantages of online courses, there a is recognition that more needs to be done to improve the technology and connectivity available to students and faculty. As CSU returns to on campus instruction, there are continuing efforts to expand online offerings as part of a strategy to expand access.
