Freedom on the Internet

Freedom House has released their Freedom on the Net 2019 report that tracks the state of the internet in 65 countries around the world. The report focuses on the growing threat to freedom posed by the use of social media for surveillance and electoral manipulation.

Of particular note are the recommendations offered for securing elections, preventing social media surveillance, and protecting internet freedom. Included in these recommendations is the injunction to train engineers and technologists on the human rights implications of the products they are involved in building. This same call should extend to data analysts who are engaged in creating the analytics derived from products and services. It is important to be aware of how such information is being used.
