The American Sociological Association has issued a statement labeling the current use of student evaluations of teaching in higher education as “problematic.” Among the problems cited are the weak relationship between student evaluations of teaching and other measures of teaching effectiveness and the tendency of such evaluations to be biased against women and people of color. The statement goes on to recommend procedures for more appropriate use of student feedback and identifies a number of institutions that have implemented such procedures. The ASA statement has been endorsed by 17 other professional associations.
