Writing in Medium, Jathan Sadowski argues that now is the time to begin dismantling the extensive infrastructure of surveillance that has grown up in recent years. This would include genuine efforts to stop the use of facial recognition — and not just suspend it as some tech companies have announced.
Sadowski notes that it might now be possible to consider legislation and regulations to eliminate the surveillance that has become commonplace. He offers several ideas for such regulation, but his most useful point is his criterion for eliminating data gathering and processing technologies: “Does this thing contribute to human well-being and/or social welfare? If not, toss it away!”
