We seldom get an opportunity to think about assessment practices over long periods of time since most of our attention is focused on year to year developments. This makes the report on the 1913 Cambridge English examination by Ben Thompson particularly interesting because it allows us to reflect on how assessment may have changed or remained the same, in this case for an assessment of the use of the English language. Since language conventions change over time, the focus and substance of assessments may also change. Check out the 1913 test questions to see for yourself.
