Overview
This course instructs you to absorb obscure statistical knowledge with a brand-new methodology on the modern social media platform – TikTok. Wait, isn’t TikTok an app for funny videos? Can we actually learn from TikTok?
In this course, you will feel the immersive social media power of learning with our detailed instructions. Mobility and connectivity are two of the most important features of TikTok, which provide more flexible learning choices. Also, the recommendation algorithm would recommend appropriate content based on your previous searches. If you click the “like” button for some funny videos, then TikTok would send you more funny videos. Similarly, if you searched and liked some academic videos, then you would learn more useful content along with funny videos during your TikTok leisure time. That’s the idea of learning on TikTok. How can TikTok be used for education?
#LearnOnTikTok has over 446.2 billion views. In a wider context, the popularity of TikTok’s education content fits into a trend towards micro-learning. Microlearning is 17% more efficient than traditional, longer-duration courses and distils topics into digestible, small chunks. Gen Z strongly prefers it.

Tiktok as a tool for teachers
- Show a TikTok video before a lesson to start a conversation.
- Upload short lesson snippets to refresh students’ memories.
- Make a creative duet video.
- Post the summarises of your lessons.
TikTok education into the future
Educational content isn’t new to social media: from physical videos to breeding cows, drawing lessons to personal cooking menus, people have been YouTubing for years before TikTok caught on. But TikTok, as the power of education content is tenfold – and it’s a resource that brands and creators alike are only just beginning to tap. Metaverse to get a glimpse into the future of learning. Supportive Learning Theories
- Connectivism: The Connectivism theory focuses on the knowledge being distributed across networks, instead of the current knowledge the learner learned. Learning occurs during navigating through these networks of knowledge points and understanding the connection between them. The learners in the TikTok learning communities would learn and teach others, and they could provide their knowledge to the community.
- Zone of Proximal Development: Lev Vygotsky developed this learning theory which refers that children and those they are learning from co-construct knowledge. The social environment has a massive impact on how they think and what they think about. Tiktok communities would significantly affect children’s thoughts either positively or negatively, depending on how rules apply to those communities. If decision-makers in TikTok could construct positive and healthy learning communities, children will benefit a lot from TikTok.
Instructions (What you have to do!)
Again, this learning journey is to develop a learning method for TikTok. We will only experience limited examples, and the biggest takeaway is to think about how individuals could maximize the influence of learning from TikTok. Today, we will explore Normal Distribution and Binomial Distribution statistical knowledge on Tiktok with the following steps:
1. Click the button below to navigate to TikTok (Also you could use the TikTok app on phone, better!)
2. Type Normal Distribution in Search Bar
3. Click the latest and most clicked videos
4. Similarly you search the Binomial Distribution
5. You have multiple ways to share with friends, if you found those videos practical and well-explained, then share with your friends!
6. Firstly, you will learn with this journey starting with Normal Distribution and Binomial Distribution, then you will start to build your own recommendation algorithm by searching more related statistics topics, or following up with your favorite teachers on TikTok.

Recommendations & Future Challenges
@freegcsemathsteacher
- I recommend freegcsemathsteacher channel for statistical learning. Because it has detailed and clear explanations of some basic and ubiquitous knowledge. You can tell the authenticity of those videos’ quality by their followers and likes! For freegcsemathsteacher, it has 1.1M followers!!
- The quality of teaching videos varies!
- The videos are NOT as professional as in the Chinese Version TikTok.
- The famous academic Youtube account has not posted too many on Tiktok.
- People in the U.S. still treat TikTok as a relaxing app to waste time on stupid videos, while if you have a chance to experience the Chinese version TikTok https://www.douyin.com/, you can compare them if you are interested.
There are a lot of comparations between DouYin and TikTok, since they belong to a same Chinese company – TikTok. But due to the regional reasons, the contents varies a lot, so people could use the information difference to get advantages from TikTok.
Douyin vs TikTok – The Differences You Never Knew (Updated 2022)
P.S.
During this project, I found a useful website for a summary of learning theories. Check it out https://www.educationcorner.com/learning-theories-in-education/
The difference between Chinese version DouYin and TikTok actually provides different inspirations for education or business.
The learning methodology from Douyin could provide huge referential values to TikTok and revolutions of TikTok education!
Love the idea! Never think of learning stat on TikTok.
And very inspiring how you compared the Chinese Douyin with TikTok!
Interesting idea! I think the power of the algorithm is something many can utilize across social media platforms (i.e. if you search one thing, similar/related items will be recommended). Definitely a powerful learning tool in seeing what’s out there!
This idea is great! The target audience is large and it’s overall easier for people to follow the learning contents in the video format.
This is a brilliant exhibit, well done Starters! I would suggest that you make an example on Douyin and people might get a better sense of how this will work out in a fully functioning short-video platform.
Brilliant idea to use TikTok as a teaching platform that uses breadth search algothrithm to spread the knowledges for subject.
I like the idea of incorporating TikTok into educational platform! In my opinion, compared to youtube, the the idea of being concise and making the topic even more interesting in a short amount of time through adding unique motion effects can enhance learners’ emotional arousal, which would lead to better memory!
The evaluation system tests if students really get the key points from their learning experience, which I think is a good strategy to prevent them from having just fun browsing videos without learning. Good job !:)
It’s a really good idea. Last summer I interned at China’s ByteBeat – the parent company of Douyin and Tiktok – where there was a very strong department called “Powerful Education,” which was a department dedicated to using algorithms to serve education.
But last year, because of the education system reform in China, many teachers and non-technical staff have been laid off, and although the department still exists, it has much less funding and capacity to grow. I think it is a good idea to serve education by relying on the core products of ByteDance. Looking forward to your further implementation.
I think the section you have on Recommendations & Future Challenges is great – you have multiple forms of assessment and considerations here, which I think is the mark of any good learning approach/resource!
It’s a great idea to use Tiktok for learning! From a traditional perspective, Tiktok is mainly for entertainment, so your idea about using TikTok to learn statistical knowledge is really creative.
However, I think this might be mainly for self-regulated learning because you cannot promise a systematical statistical knowledge structure as well as the quality of the videos as learning materials.
That’s an interesting idea since I never thought of learning from TikTok! Is it possible to get some pop quiz when users are using TikTok by the data related with TikTok to further combining the education function with TikTok, to make that to be a unique function other than other short video apps in market.
I think it’s a good idea. I often watch this type of video app, and sometimes I also watch some popular science videos to gain some knowledge. So I think there’s a certain amount of learning going on in that way.
Very organized and detailed exhibit! Will you develop a more inclusive or exclusive community? Sometimes tiktok send videos to users which are not your target group of people.
+1 @tianshurann – I think real functioning examples the team creates would be great.
With the rise of Tik Tok, especially after the pandemic, I can see how it can become a popular learning tool. I find myself searching random topics on Tik Tok as well to quickly find answers.
A very comprehensive demonstration of how to learn stats in Tiktok, love the channel that your group recommended. It is surprising that an entertainment short-video platform can help us learning statistics.
Good idea to learn from TikTok! I like how you compare TikTok with Chinese one. People may become more engaged by using TikTok to learn materials.
Love the idea! The guidance to learn Normal Distribution and Binomial Distribution statistical knowledge on TikTok is clear and I also learned a lot about how can TikTok be used for education. I just have a small suggestion. As a learner, I wish I could get more advice on which channel I should follow. Because, as a beginner, it is difficult for me to judge by myself which teacher is good or the quality of the video content. As you guys mentioned in the future challenges, the quality of the content varies. Therefore, I personally hope you guys can recommend some channels as a starting point for building a TikTok learning network.
