According to the Washington Post Editorial Board, China has turned its Xinjiang province into a zone of repression where a variety of data science techniques and types of data are being combined to create the ultimate surveillance state. Over 2.5 million people are being tracked by cameras with location data being combined with facial recognition data and various types of background information.

The Xinjiang case provides a contemporary example of how data and data science techniques can be used by governments to maintain control and secure power. In the absence of political systems that protect individual data and privacy, governmental action can take dark turns.
