Self-Directed Learning in Nursery School

We often think about self-directed learning as appropriate for adults or older children, but a report in the Manchester Evening News describes a nursery school where the entire program is rooted in providing the young children (age 18 months to 4 years) with opportunities to direct their own learning. The school adopted this approach with the arrival several years ago of a new principal who is the driving force.

As described in the report, the approach has been well received by the children and their parents. The principal and teachers point out how hard the teachers work to provide the required level of choice for the children. The school offers a vivid illustration of the prospects for learning when learners are in control.
