The UK Information Commissioner’s Office has released a Code of Practices for Age Appropriate Design for Online Services. The code contains 15 standards for age appropriate design. These standards, rooted in the GDPR, offer the most comprehensive and instructive set of guidelines for those developing digital services aimed at children.

Each of the 15 standards is presented clearly with accompanying detailed explanatory material. Links and references to supporting materials are also included. Discussions for some of the standards include variations in how they might apply to children in different age ranges and to digital providers of different size and scale.

Although the standards are directed to developers of digital services, they are also useful for analysts and researchers planning data gathering initiatives involving children. After being approved by Parliament, the standards are expected to go into effect in 2021.
