A provocative article in IoT Agenda explores some of the sociological issues raised by the Internet of Things and related technologies. Such issues are likely to become more pressing as technology progresses and networked devices are embedded in many of the spaces we visit.

When networked sensors proliferate and gather data on us all, questions are raised regarding the degree to which we retain any claims to privacy. We often have little choice but to submit to these data gathering activities, and we may not even be aware of them as the technologies become more pervasive and more difficult to detect.

With the growing use of biometric authentication, our own bodies are subject to increasing measurement and data collection. In such cases, there are often no alternatives but to submit and surrender our data simply to move about. Moreover, unlike account names, biometric data cannot be revoked.
