An article by Chris Smith explains how Google is using data it gathers from android phones to examine the use of apps and develop its own versions to compete. While Google claims that the data is anonymous and does not identify users, it does use the data to develop an understanding of how the potential rival apps are being used.

Google has access to a enormous amounts of data generated by the users of its various applications, including users in colleges and universities that have adopted Google apps for their students who have little choice but to use the apps specified to conduct institutional activities. If you had something of potential value, would you allow information on it to appear on a system controlled by Google? Or any of the other tech giants for that matter?
